Cal/FHN (DH) Summary

Yesterday the Scots played FHN n their home finale. They won both games but I do not know how/ the scores as I missed Evrything but the first 4 innings of game 1 due to dehydration/illness. Shoutout to all my boys on picking up the W without me though.

Cal/Covenant Christian Recap

Yesterday the Scots took on the Chargers of Covenant Christian in what on paper is the most lopsided  game of the season. The Class A Scots with a 14-8 record were playing a struggling Class D Chargers team who only had a 2-14 record, so nobody even the Covenant coach expected this to be a close match telling me at first base "I don't think it'll matter all that much who you throw, you'll be fine." This coach was 100% spot on because the entire day was a rout. In game 1, the Scots started Mitch McCallum who walked one and struck out 11 in 4 innings. The Scots bats came alive the entire game and in the 3rd inning they sent 12 batters to the plate and scored 8 runs to make it 14-0. In the 4th inning, the Covenant reliever came in and just couldn't prevent the inevitable. He came in with two runners on and walked his first batter putting Mike Andrusiak up with one out and the bases loaded needing one run for a mercy, Coach Lind's exact words to Andrusiak were "Do not walk. At any cost we do not want to win this on a walk." Mike had swung at two that were terrible and worked the count to full, however the next one went behind his back and he was walked ending the game in a 15-0 mercy in which Covenant had 1 base runner on a walk and put one ball in play in which Trent Foreman picked up the grounder at second and tossed it to me at first. The Scots' amazing family support gave the boys, coaches, themselves and even some students an incredible between game cookout meal. In game 2, the Scots had by far the most unique lineup of the season. Usual middle infielder Keegan Mulvey was behind the dish, another usual infielder Trent Foreman was in center field, usual first baseman Nick Adams was at third base, and usual center fielder Austin Coon started on the hill for his first appearance of 2013. Coon pitched exceptional for not pitching in over a calendar year, going 3 innings allowing 0 hits and striking out 5 however he did walk 6 and allowed the one run Covenant managed to score yesterday. Even though it took a bit longer, the Scots bats were equally as productive in game 2. The Scots managed 14 runs in 3 innings and the most memorable hit would have to be the triple to right past the diving right fielder for Nate Pinder driving in 2 and making it 13-1 (He would later come around to score to make it 14-1.) but everybody in the lineup reached base at least once in this game. In the fourth inning we all witnessed a sight we will most likely never see again in our lives. Danny Paas for the first time since the 8th grade stepped on the hill to try and get the final 3 outs to secure the mercy. Paas got a ground out to Foreman at first (yes, Foreman played first quite well I might add) for out number one, then Adams got a grounder at third and airmailed it over the 5'10" Foreman and the runner ended up being on second. Paas K'd the next guy and finished the deal on the following batter to end the game in a 14-1 win. Covenant Christian the entire day had 0 hits, 7 walks, reached on 1 error and 1 fielders choice. They scrapped together one run and lost a combined 29-1, but these kids play hard, they're great kids on and off the field (I loved talking to these guys) and they were without 4 kids to varsity and that kills a small school like this. Best luck to these guys in the future though because they play the game hard. The Scots play their next game on May the 21st in a doubleheader against the Huskies of Forest Hills Northern. The Scots are now 16-8 and are 4 wins away from back to back 20 win seasons. Until Tuesday...#BULLPEN

Cal/EGR Summary (Game3)

Today the Scots boarded the buses for the final conference game of the head, to pay their visit to the East Grand Rapids Pioneers. As they warmed up they realized that the field wasn't the amazing field they expected as the outfield had some rugged terrain, however other than a tumble by yours truly in infield/outfield there was no effect. The Scots were sending continual star Keegan Mulvey to the bump expecting a solid performance. Mulvey did his part of the deal getting the balls to the defense to field but the second half of the deal was not completed. The Scots fumbled and threw the ball all over committing 11 errors today, in the 14-9 win, the boys gave up only one earned run the entire way. Mulvey went five and earned himself yet another W but this one will be attributed to the bats. The Scots scored 14 runs on 15 hits including an astonishing 4 triples. Keegan Mulvey, Ben Hamp and Caleb Sleeman contributed these for the Scots. Caleb Sleeman by far the best statistical hitter of the day went 3/5 with two triples and a double. Base running errors were also present as in the 5th the Scots had a runner on third and Adams hit a beautiful sac fly to the outfield, but for the 6th time this season the Scots didn't complete a sacrifice successfully. The Scots had to overcome these sloppy mistakes but with timely hitting they held on to defeat the struggling Pioneers. The highlight of the game would be the 4th inning when the Scots put up a 7 spot and batted around to the 12th batter, including back to back triples by Mulvey and Sleeman. The Scots play a Doubleheader tomorrow against Covenant Christian trying to take the win streak to 6. Cal/EK Summary

The Caledonia Fighting Scots sitting at 12-8 had a non conference road trip to fellow M-6 rival East Kentwood in a single game makeup from a rainout in April. The Scots were sending lefty Nick Tuori to the hill to try and pick up his second W of the season. Before the game, fellow lefty Sam Vanderwal told Tuori that "a gem is giving up 2 runs over 5 innings". Well exceed a gem he did, Tuori threw a complete game scattering 12 hits yet only allowing 2 runs (1 earned) and struck out 6 in the process. One major contribution to Tuori's success on the bump was the incredible defense shown by his infield the entire day. The lead off hitter (much to Tuori's discretion) went 4/4 and had his number all day long. The second hitter however fell victim as the infield characters of Austin Coon, Keegan Mulvey, Trent Foreman and Ben Hamp all turned glorious double plays to retire both of these men each time. While the defense was quite stellar, it was the offensive run support that did the trick. EK started some guy who was a righty and threw dead slow fastballs that made some former teammates look like Justin Verlander. The Scots jumped on him all day and there was far too many amazing performances to name each individual so here's some highlights. Nate Pinder had a spectacular bunt to start a 4 run rally for the Scots which included a s spectacular bunt by Tuori (yet again) which would go down as hit number 1 on the season (it's about time). In a peculiar moment Paas was at second and Vandy at third and Paas was about to overrun Vanderwal and then on the throw back to second , it went into center field and each guy moved up a base. The Scots gave Tuori 11 runs and he did the rest finishing off the EK Falcons on a grounder to Ben Hamp at second. Shoutout to the entire squad for picking me up in various ways today appreciate it. The Scots play at EGR in their final conference game tommorow. On the bump (assuming he can throw) is Keegan Mulvey who has appeared dominant throughout the year and hopefully can continue it tomorrow so the Scots get the sweep.

Cal/EGR (DH) Recap

The Scots started their final conference series of the year today with a home doubleheader against the dreaded Pioneers of East Grand Rapids. In case you aren't from Caledonia, (such as Russia or Germany or even Sioux Falls,SD) the East Grand Rapids are comparable to the New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Lakers and Detroit Red Wings. All wealthy, tradition rich programs who you either love or hate. The Scots badly wanted to get both these wins but today before the game they suffered a slight setback. Normally the Scots have 15 roster players however today Trent Foreman and Caleb Sleeman were on varsity and then Mitch McCallum and Keegan Mulvey were not able to play along with the ineligible Mitch Kious so the Scots had 10 active players. In game one they threw Sammy Vanderwal who usually deals but they're was questions with the starting defense since a lot of people weren't where they usually play. The Scots in the bottom of the first scored 7 runs on 7 hits and sent 11 batters to the dish. The Pioneers were beat down but never gave up. They clawed to 7-2 but then the Scots struck again and put up a 5 spot in the 4th inning to make it 12-2. Now just needing three outs the Scots were confident, however the Pioneers never gave up and resiliently scored two runs in the top to make it 12-4. At this point, the Scots sent Nick Tuori to the pen to relieve Vanderwal if the Scots didn't score two in the bottom half. That was unnecessary though due to one "clutch" hit by Danny Paas. With Zeman and Adams on base, Paas sent one into the outfield scoring both and giving the Scots a 14-4 mercy win.
In game number two the Scots sent Nick Adams to the hill to try and take the 2-0 series lead. Adams didnt receive the same run support but he did throw well and had some varying amounts of defense behind him. The Scots pulled out a 3-2 win and almost had to go to the closer Nick Tuori but Carl wouldn't pull the hook and Adams slammed the door, but not as easy as expected he struck the first batter out but it got away from catcher Dan Zeman (yes somehow he caught, surprisingly well atta way Dirty Dan) and then Zemans throw went into right field and the runner took third base. We exchanged an out for a run and it was cut to 3-2 and that would be the final. The Scots improve to 12-8 and will play at EK Wednesday

Cal/Rockford DH Recap/Quotes

Hey sorry I was too busy this weekend to draft the rockford recap so here's a brief summary. The Scots got trashed as starter Nick Adams lasted 2 innings and didnt quite go to work and they got mercies on a run allowed by Nate Pinder (yes your read that right) 12-2 in game 2, the Scots won on a 2 hit shoutout by Keegan Mulvey which earned him a victory in a bet with yours truly. The Scots moved to 10-8 on the year.

Cal/Lowell Game 3 Recap

The Scots were at home on Thursday taking on the Lowell Red Arrows hoping for a sweep I. The series after picking up the first two wins tuesday on the road. They sent Sammy Vamderwal to the hill and the consistent lefty was equally consistent yet again. Vanderwal pitched 4 innings allowing 2 hits and one run which was unearned. The run was scored on a single up the middle in the 2nd following an error in the infield. The 1-0 lead would prove big enough as the Scots bats were silent all game. Cal had 2 guys reach third base the entire day, one was stranded and the other picked off. On the pick off, that may have been the biggest blunder of an inning all year. The Scots had Adams on third and Andrusiak on first with one out in the 4th. Andrusiak took off toward second and the catcher made a quality pump fake drawing Adams off third. Despite being not far off the bag, the catcher rifled a throw and a rundown ensued. The end result was Adams getting tagged out attempting to slide back into 3rd and Andrusiak was stranded at second by a pop fly. The 7th inning was the last good shot the Scots had and yet another blunder ensued. Trent Foreman got on with one out and attempted to steal second twice but both pitches were fouled off. The batter was retired and then with two outs Foreman stole second, putting the tying run 180 feet away. However Keegan Mulveys line shot to the left side was snagged and that ended the last rally the Scots had and ending the game with a 1-0 loss. The Scots relief pitcher Mitch McCallum threw 3 solid innings and made tremendous plays on the hill to get himself out of potentially dangerous situations. The Scots fall to 9-7 and will travel to Rockford tommorow for a doubleheader.

Thoughts-

So today we played Lowell and we got lost going to their field. First we went to the high school and yelled at the lax idiots on the bus across from us. Then we drove through the glorious hills of Lowell and got to the field which at first looked like a pile but the longer you were there it kind of grew on you. So when I found out I wasn't starting I coached first base and I did get to celebrate Mitch Horgans first JV hit with him (he wasn't all that excited like Hudson/McCallum). Unlike last three games no runners at first got picked off so that's a good thing. So Giles told me to warm up when Adams got in a bit of a jam and so I got Paas and warmed up and felt great despite throwing 75pitches/5innings yesterday. Sadly, I was not used but I'll take the W either way. I didn't play in game 2 either but with three games left this week, I will for sure get a start or quality amount of relief innings so I'm good with that. Shoutout to Trent for goin to work on varsity, and to my newly found readers in Russia. Happy that y'all are reading I appreciate it so please spread the word of caledonia baseball around the world. We wouldn't mind a game in Russia that'd be sweet (Moscow maybe?) until next time...#BULLPEN

Cal/Lowell (DH) Recap

The Scots were headed to Lowell today to take on the 3-8 Red Arrows in a conference clash. In game 1, the Scots sent Nick Adams to the hill and needed a quality outing to mend the lack of bullpen. What a quality outing they would receive, as Adams threw all 7 innings striking out 8 and yielding only 1 run (but according to Bryce he threw 106 pitches). He gave the Scots a perfect opportunity to get the W and boy did they do that. Today was the JV debut of Varsity star Mitch Horgan who is rehabbing a nagging arm injury by just DHing for the JV. In his first at bat, Horgan doubled to centerfield giving the Scots a 1-0 lead. The next batter he would score, as Nick Adams doubled to give them a 2-0 lead. Dan Zeman and Keegan Mulvey chipped in in the 4th and 5th and by that point it was 6-1. In the 7th, Nate Pinder singled to the right centerfield gap and broth in a pair to make it 8-1. Nate took off toward second and the pitcher balked (much to the disapproval of the Lowell skipper) and it was a free run for Spraggins making it 9-1. A passed ball would score Pinder and the final was 10-1. The Scots were rolling on all cylinders game 1 except one base running mistake that ended an inning w/ Mulvey in the box and Horgan on deck.
   In game 2, the Scots were sending their most consistently dominant starter, Keegan Mulvey to the mound to try and sweep the day. Keegan was straight dealing and with some help by newfound third base star Austin Coon, he steamrolled through the first five innings allowing only 1 run. That run came in the first and in the top of the third the Scots answered. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Danny Paas stepped up to the dish to try and break up the shutout. Break up he exactly did, singling to left center and both runs would score giving the Scots a 2-1 lead. In the 5th inning, Mike Andrusiak singled giving the Scots a 4-1 lead and with one out it appeared a few more would be tacked on. Andrusiak easily took second and on a Ben Hamp single was trying to go all the way. As he rounded third, he was given the stop sign but had his head down due to receiving an earlier go sign and took off toward home. Well, Andrusiak got out at the plate and the skipper was furious benching him and moving Spraggins from right to left field. In the bottom of the 6th, which would be the last inning due to darkness, the Red Arrows had a runner on and one out with some tall yet kinda scrawny  guy at the dish, Keegan Mulvey seemed in prime position to keep the 3 run lead...well yea about that. The scrawny guy poked a high fly ball to left over the head of Spraggins for a home run cutting the lead to 4-3. Mulvey easily retired the last 2 batters and the Scots narrowly escaped the town of Lowell with 2 Ws. They will play Lowell Thursday for a chance at a sweep.

CAL/SOUTH (DH) Recap

So Im first gonna start by apologizing for this unusually late post. I got way too much homework and did not have time to complete this, so anyway here we go. The Scots were set to play a home doubleheader against cross-town rival South Christian. The first game the Scots decided to throw Nick Tuori for his first start of 2913. Dominantly a relief pitcher, this was a new role but Tuori fared quite well. Tuori lasted 5 innings scattering 7 hits and 4 runs, however only 1 run was earned. Tuori walked 1 and K'd 6 but picked up the loss. The main reason behind Tuoris loss was the lack of bats. The Scots were no hit for 3.2 innings until Trent Foreman had a single to break up the no-no. They eventually scrapped together a run in the 4th and 5th but when Tuori was done it was 4-2. Mike Andrusiak came into relieve and was as average as normal, nothing amazing yet nothing terrible. He gave up two runs and got bailed out by Keegan Mulvey and the infield gang who all game long turned double plays like turning on a radio. The Scots valiantly charged back into this game and a sac fly by Caleb Sleeman scoring Ben Hamp made it a 6-5 game with two down in the 7th. That was as close as the Scots would get though as SammyV struck out to end the game giving the Sailors a 6-5 W.
Game number 2 (following a delicious meal by the Coons and Pinders) was going to be started by Sammy V, who consistently puts up quality outings. Vanderwal did just that again yesterday throwing a complete game in 103 pitches allowing 2 earned runs the duration of the game. Vanderwal needed to throw the gem he threw because there was nobody left to throw, Nate Pinder and Austin Coon, both outfielders were set to toss for the Scots in relief (neither has thrown this year). The Scots bats came alive early scoring 2 in the first. This game was relatively a coast for the Scots, who were in control the duration of the game and never gave up the lead.the Scots ended up pulling out a 6-2 victory and now improve to 7-6 on the year. They got a DH at Lowell today to work on that conference record.

Thoughts

So I didn't get to play in today's game but it was up there on one of the better games to be a part of. Coach Lind, using his Davenport expertise, got us to pull off some "baseball swag" on the bench and actually it looks pretty sweet. Nothing like sniping batters with Paas and Hamp, or the cliche superman by Mike after his double. We finally blended together well chemistry wise for the first time this year, at least in the dugout and if we can get that going then watch out world we will roll by every single squad. Tuesday we got 2 vs Lowell so chances are Ill throw and I can't wait for that opportunity. Hopefully coach Giles will give me a shot to hit because I wanna get that first hit on the year seeing that I've only batted 3 times. With all the hope and excitement building for 5 days, Im out. Shoutout to Logan Hudson for reaching varsity, along with Mitch Horgan, Chris Clark and Dan Zeman for already being there, hopefully I'll get to join you next season. #BULLPEN

Cal/FHC Game 3 Recap

The Scots set off to Forest Hills Central High School today to take on the Rangers with a lot of chances on the line. With a win, they would sweep the Rangers, continue a 3 game win streak and most importantly they would break .500 for the first time all year long. There was the absence of Logan Hudson today, who was called up to varsity last night. Also, bat boy Bryce Mercer was also missing from the squad for disclosed reasons. New to the squad today was freshman Mitch McCallum. McCallum, a freshman transfer from St. Clair,Michigan was on a tear for the freshman squad and is a very high quality catcher so it was only time before he was going to join the JV squad. McCallum did not provide a huge offensive boost like Hudson did in his debut, as he went 0/2 but did draw a walk and got plunked. The main input he had however was behind the dish. Mitch, with Keegan Mulvey's assistance (I believe), called a beautiful game and should have thrown a batter out but the dime was dropped. Mitch "planned" the greatest play of the game, arguably the turning point. Sleeman threw an errant pitch, which was called, and McCallum popped up and slowly came back toward the plate but the runner was froze about 25 feet from the plate. So Mitch threw it to Sleeman who applied the easy tag and that play sparked the 7th inning overflow of offense. The offense for the Scots had its ups and downs all game long. In the first inning, Trent Foreman singled in a run to put them up 1-0 but he got picked off trying to advance bases. After an error led to a 1-1 tie, Austin Coon broke the tie with a base knock in the 2nd. The Scots also scored in the 3rd and the 4th on RBIs by Keegan Mulvey and Trent Foreman. The Scots gave Keegan Mulvey five runs through 5 innings, however it could have been at least 10. There  were multiple base running errors all night, guys were picked off, back picked, caught in rundowns, tried to take an extra base and they suffered from it. The Scots bats went silent for the 5th and apparently the gloves did too. Three of the six errors committed in the game were in the 5th which led to three unearned runs. All in all, starter Keegan Mulvey gave up 5 runs, all unearned over 4.2 innings. Caleb Sleeman worked the boys out of a second and third jam and then coasted fairly easily thru the sixth except 3 errors which led to 2 more runs. It was 7-7 at that point and the top of the 7th was going to lead off with Keegan Mulvey. Mulvey singled and after hit by Adams and a passed ball it was 2nd and 3rd no outs for Trent Foreman. For the third time Foreman came up clutch, singling in both runners for his fourth RBI of the game and more importantly giving the Scots the 9-7 lead. The Scots would tack on another run and then they sent Sleeman out in the 7th to finish the deal. Allowing one hit thanks to a Paas jinx but nothing more, Sleeman quickly closed the door and the Scots took a 10-7 win for a sloppy sweep of the FHC Rangers. They are now 6-5 and on a 4 game win streak. The next game is Tuesday at Lowell for a doubleheader,

Thoughts

So today was key because I knew we were going to have a shot to get to .500 which would also mean a 3 game win streak. I wanted to chip in however possible but I really wanted to provide help from the bump. So in the fourth inning when Carl told me to go get loose I was excited. I grabbed Paas and we went and tossed in the pen. I felt like the bullpen pitcher I've always dreamed of becoming. So, in the fifth with two on and one gone, Carl motioned for myself to toss. I trotted out there doing my thing and botched my first warmup toss. Then I calmed down went over my signs and went to work. I  blew the save but it was a tough spot (not to make excuses). So Keegs picked me up and gave me the lead but again off some errors and a hit it was gone again. I then got saved by Zeman in left (thanks so much) and then Huddy walked off and I was probably the most ecstatic of anyone. Spent the rest of the day coaching but I did my job, threw my innings out of the pen and got the W! Shoutout is given to two people tonight. First teammate shoutout to my boy T for catching an incredible game. Second to Lizzie Brown for showing up and supporting the squad..means a lot! Until Thursday, #BULLPEN

Cal/FHC (DH) Recap

The Scots took on the Forest Hills Central Rangers today hoping to get to .500 for the first time all year. They sent Mike Andrusiak into the hill for his first outing of 2013 and oh boy was it a good one. Defying the expectations of most people, Andrusiak gave the Scots 4.1 solid innings and allowed 3 runs but only 2 being earned. The Scots left runners on in each of the first two innings but eventually the hits started coming. Key and timely hits were a pattern all day and the Scots took a 3-1 lead into the fifth inning. Mike Andrusiak had retired one batter and their was runners on second and third when coach Carl Giles called on the lefty Nick Tuori. Tuori allowed a bloop single to blow his second save of the year and the game was tied at 3. In the bottom half, Keegan Mulvey contributed to the run giving the boys a 4-3 lead headed to the sixth. In the sixth, a wild pickoff attempt put the runner on third and a flyout to Coon in center allowed for a tag and a tie game at 4. Tuori got in a bit of a jam with a runner on second and one out but after a shallow fly ball foul to Hudson there was two gone. Foreman then rallied the infield and tried to pick off the batter at second and missed him by a half step. The next pitch was a bomb to left and left fielder Dan Zeman went on his horse racing back and saved a huge run by making a tremendous catch. In the bottom half, Caleb Sleeman singled to start the rally. Then Trent Foreman immediately singled to put two on and following an out, Logan Hudson stepped up to the dish with a walk off opportunity on the line. Hudson roped one into the centerfield gap and Sleeman would score without a throw and the Scots walked off winners. Nick Tuori (1-0, 3.23) picked up his first W of the year and the Scots drew a game closer to even.
      In game 2, they sent Sammy Vanderwal to the bump and again the starter did his job. Vandy threw a solid 4 innings and even chipped in two singles. V-Wal K'd 8 and allowed 0 earned runs but left the game in a 1-1 tie. The game was tied at 2s in the bottom of the sixth when the Scots came to life. The Scots got a hit from Sleeman who tore the cover off the ball today and it rolled from there. He stole second, and was on third after an out when Dan Zeman stepped up to the dish. Zeman slapped one thru to the outfield and Sleeman came in to score giving the Scots a 3-2 lead. The boys would tack on another to cushion the lead to 4-2 headed to the top of the 7th. Then they brought in varsity starter Zeman to get the save because as he said, "coach I gotta throw a bullpen so why don't I get you some outs?" So coach Carl put him in and it was a breeze. In 8 pitches Zeman got the side retired capped off by a 5-4-3 double play from Mulvey to Sleeman to Adams. So we needed a huge win today because 2-6 would've been terrible and it could have unraveled especially since the Jenison team is real bad. Two losses to them would have upset the fan base, coaches and players so today was pivotal. So today's win is important beyond the stress I am giving it. So I was given the opportunity to start in right field today and for not receiving a single ball in my direction I absolutely loved it. Roamed the outfield with Coonie and Logan Hudson, none of us had that much responsibility, and I got to be a part of a quality win for my boy Keegs and the squad. I would have loved to get the call to visit the hill but the guys who did toss pitched beautifully and we got a lot games coming up so Ill probably get a few shots on the bump. I was awarded defensive player of the game by Coach Giles so that was pretty sweet for my lack of efforts. Well now for my shoutout, Dan Zeman asked for it but yea not this time..shoutout to Sleeman for making the killer defensive plays and Keegs and Trent for shutting it down on the hill. Cal/Jenison Game 3 Recap

The Scots and the Jenison Wildcats split two games earlier this week and today the Scots were at home and sent Keegan Mulvey to the bump to win the rubber match. Mulvey in his previous two starts threw gems with a solid ERA of 2.25, however he couldn't pick up the win in either both times drawing no decisions. Today just had a feeling that it would be the first W for him and that feeling was on point. After trading zeros in the first frame, the Scots got one run on the board in the 2nd off an RBI groundout by catcher Danny Paas. The Scots lead would expand later on 2RBI hits by Tremt Foreman and Logan Hudson. The Scots would continue to get all over the starting pitcher for the Wildcats getting hit after hit, and even got some help on errors throughout the rest of this game. In the bottom of the 5th up 5-1, Danny Paas put yet another a ball in play a quality fly ball to right and the right fielder dropped it and another run scored. Keegan Mulvey chipped in a pair of RBIs and Michael Andrusiak broke his slump with a single that put it at 9-1. The Scots only needed the first three innings of offense though because starter Keegan Mulvey was as Eric Tuori put it "on fire." He pitched 5 innings allowed one run struck out 6 and only walked 1. There were multiple instances where Mulvey ran into slight amounts of trouble but his second basemen was always there. Caleb Sleeman turned three double plays in this game including one with runners on the corners and one out that saved an early run from scoring in the 2nd to keep the game scoreless. Trenton Foreman came in to pitch the final 2 innings to preserve Mulveys first win of the year and it gives the Scots a to game win streak and improves their conference record to 2-3 with a 3-5 overall record. It was definately their best game of the year with only 3 walks and 1 error. The Scots will take on the Forest Hills Central Rangers tuesday for a doubleheader at home in pursuit to even their season record.

Thoughts

Well for the first time in a half week I finally got to don the uniform and play the glorious game given to us by The Lord. Thank The Lord for it too I mean today was a sunny day with average temperature and little wind, almost beautiful. After all this rain we needed the ability to lace the cleats up and throw it around the horn (sorry guys I forgot the first time). In game one as Adams was on the hill, Lind rushed me to warmup in the bullpen fearing that the game would continue unraveling. Oh how I love throwing bullpen sessions and I felt great but sadly never got the call. In game 2 I was set to relieve for Vandy, but he threw the entire game and so I was also never called in. I got 2 innings at first base but otherwise it was typical bullpen stuff messing with Coach Lind, talkin to Bryce and the other guys on the bench, coaching first base, doing other pointless little things to pass the time. With every pitcher but Keegs, Trent and I throwing chances are I'll get a look on the bump tomorrow in the series finale. I'll be ready and motivated as I need to get that ERA down. So hoping I get to throw otherwise I know I got innings Friday versus Allendale. So until tommorow for yet another update, I'll give today's shoutout to my squad because the rest of them started reading (during class at times) and I appreciate the moments and quotes that they allow me to write about. Cal/Jenison Recap

The Scots went back to Jenison for their second trip in two days hoping the rain would hold off and they'd get to face the Wildcats. Little did the Scots know that today freshman Logan Hudson would be joining them for his JV debut, and boy what a debut. After 1st inning runs by Austin Coon and Keegan Mulvey, the Scots gave starter Caleb Sleeman a 2-0 cushion. He got a little squeezed, didn't get much help and over the 3.1 innings he tossed 7 runs crossed the plate. While the game was 7-3 in the 4th Logan Hudson stepped up with two on. The pitcher gave him a beautiful pitch and Hudson nailed it into straightaway centerfield for a HomeRun, the first hit by a Fighting Scot this season! The jubilant look on Momma Hudson's face as her son rounded the bases was priceless. Coaching first base I was in shock as the ball jumped off his bat and over the fence. Our team went ballistic and it appeared to be a momentum turn. After a solid 2/3 inning by Hudson after Sleeman, the Scots took a 7-6 deficit into the 5th with Nick Adams coming onto the hill. That was as close as the Scots would get however as some hits, errors, hit batsmen, walks and even a light dugout tussle between two players (not releasing who to save them from wrath). The Scots gave up 5 runs and ended up losing 12-7.
    The Scots needed some kind of motivation in between games and in a combination of Mr Zeman/Mrs Spraggins pizza and Coach Lind's "pep talk" the Scots came out the gates firing in game 2 hungry for that second W of the year. They jumped out to an early lead with the most impressive run being the play involving Austin Coon and Keegan Mulvey. With Coon on third and Keegs on first, Mulvey "brought the hurricane" and bolted toward second base to get into a pickle. They were completely focused on him and Coonie broke off toward the dish and gracefully crossed the plate with a late throw being the only slim chance. The catcher immediately fired to second to get Mulvey but the throw was booted and Mulvey was safe and eventually scored. The Scots were up 3-0 after one and behind starter Sam Vanderwal they were comfortably rolling the entire game. Vandy had a perfect game for 2.1 innings and was coasting comfortably the entire day. They were up 9-1 and coach Lind emptied out his bench and 5 of 9 starters were removed from the game. There was some flashy defense (not to promote myself but I had a stellar play in the 5th on a ball in the hole...sorry Hamper!) and some well timed hitting and base running in this one as the boys were rolling on all cylinders and ended up with a 9-1 win in a 5 inning game shortened due to darkness. The Scots will face Jenison again tomorrow with skipper Carl Giles back with the squad and trying to improve their 2-5 record. Game is at home approximately 415 PM EST. It is unknown who will be on the bump for the Scots but there are limited options.

So it was raining the entire time and I mean I felt we would get one in for sure as the radar showed multiple glimmers of hope. Actually there was a slim chance I was going to manage as Coach Lind was a game time decision and Sleeman nominated me next in charge. That got me excited for this one since being a bullpen pitcher all the time, new opportunities are real fun like even coaching first or third in a scrimmage whatever I can get. And in all games Sleeman pitches, I usually get to relief pitch so I was pumped as in one of these two games I knew I was gonna get an opportunity to deal. Sadly, that never came but in hindsight it was probably the best bus ride of the season. Well we most likely play tommorow and so I'm dying for that shot on the bump. Cal/Jenison Rainout Recap

Well for the second time in as many weeks good ole Mother Nature told the Scots that they weren't going to play a conference road game. The Scots boarded the bus and ventured out to Jenison today to take on the winless wildcats with both squads in search of their first conference win. The Scots were set to be without their skipper serving his mandatory game for being ejected this weekend, so Coach Josh Lind was going to manage them for the doubleheader. As they got off the bus, it was raining but not heavily enough to where they had to cancel so they trotted past a average looking varsity field toward the not so nice looking JV diamond. The dugouts were tiny and as the rain was starting to dense, the field was puddled. The Jenison skipper came over and told us"here at Jenison we play through anything, we never cancel." Hopefully he was being sarcastic otherwise that guy just lied to a bunch of optimistic sophomores because as we were set to take infield the umpires called coach Lind over and called the game. So the rainout count is now up to 10 but on a positive note the games are tenetively set to take place tommorow afternoon. So the Scots are still 1-4 and will still send out Sleeman on the bump whenever that next game arrives.

Thoughts- So Hudsonville in April was a lot colder then when I was playin for the state semi finals there mid November, there field is gorgeously amazing. I mean they had a minor league comparable bullpen..at home we have no bullpen! So lived the bullpen life today and came in to relieve Zeman. Pitched great first inning then couldn't find the strike zone inning number two. So 1.1 innings for me I got a 12.27 ERA, a Hold and a Blown Save on the year. Not great numbers but I'll figure it out with some more opportunity provided I get one. Game two I actually got my first PA of the year! Like all relief pitchers I promptly struck out..no surprise there. But the second field was dumpy probably still better than ours though. We legged one out w/o Carl as our skipper and Joshy filled in and did a heck of a job but lucked out Adams knew how to finish because he had Mike set to pitch next oh my what a disaster that could have been! But we took third and I still love this squad and my role as a bullpen pitcher and I'll embrace it for life because that's my shot in the future, so I'll keep grinding trying to get more holds or saves and lower my ungodly high ERA. Hudsonville Invitational Recap

The Scots played two games at Hudsonville this weekend for the 2013 Hudsonville Invitational. In the first game the Scots bolted out to a 9-2 lead into the 5th after scoring in the first 5 innings, 4 quality innings by Dan Zeman and 1 relief inning by Nick Tuori. As Tuori trotted out to take the hill in the 5th a sudden, and very annoying sense of confidence appeared to fill the Hudsonville dugout. As Tuori later recalls it, "it's like pitching to a dugout of softball girls that all hit an awkward level of puberty." Tuori got Jared Blum to flyout but couldnt get a call in the zone and walked 3 straight. He left the game w/ 1.1 IP and was charged w/ 2 ER to move his ERA to 12.72 but he does record hold number one on the year. Sam Vanderwal entered the game after Tuori and didn't record an out and just walked 4 guys. So with the sacks full and a 9-6 game, Trent Foreman came in to try and bandage the wound of the inning. Well, that partially occurred as he only gave up 2 more runs and the Scots took to the 6th a 9-8 lead. In the 6th as happened to Tuori and Vanderwal earlier, Foreman couldn't get a corner called and 2 runs were walked in and the Scots coaching staff including honorary member Chris Clark were livid. Actually all of us on the bench were livid. So in the 7th down 10-9 the Scots rally attempt didnt really happen at all as they went 1-2-3 and so the Hudsonville Eagles defeated the Scots 10-9. Trent Foreman dropped to 0-3 on the year and the Scots fell to 0-4.
               In game 2, the Scots had to move across town to take on the Unity Christian Crusaders in the 3rd place game. The Scots had Keegan Mulvey off a gallant no decision in his first outing on the bump and varsity starter Chris Clark behind the dish. In his JV debut at the plate, Clark drove in the first run of the game and they tacked on another to go up 2-0 after the top of the first. In the bottom half however, Clark dropped the third strike on the first punch out by Mulvey and that runner along with another eventually came around to score. Knotted at 2, the Scots scored 2 more runs with RBIs by Clark in the third inning. After tacking on another run off an RBI by Nate Pinder the Scots led 5-2 into the 4th inning. In the fifth inning, the world started falling apart. Keegan Mulvey relinquished 4 straight hits to the outfield and then Carl Giles in what would be his last managerial move of the afternoon, brought in the righty Nick Adams, who promptly got an out but allowed for 2 runs to score. Then it happened. With two outs, Adams threw an inside fastball and the batter took a hack and it hit him on the arm. Somehow in a way that defies the laws of baseball, this guy was given first base. Well the fire in the always calm Carl Giles was blazing as he tore out of the dugout and wanted to know the answer to the same question everyone else in attendance wanted to know, how did that call happen? Well he dropped one swear word, (bull****) and he got ejected. So the skipper took his belongings and not-so quietly left the complex. This long and annoying delay even got to center fielder Michael Andrusiak who exclaimed, "This is ridiculous can we just play already?" Well after about 10 minutes or so order was restored. The game however became tied as another quality start by Keegan Mulvey was marked with a no decision. In a 5-5 game nobody scored in the 6th or the 7th and we marched into our first extra inning extravaganza of the year. In the 8th, Keegan Mulvey led the Scots off with his third hit of the day. Mulvey would be the eventual winning run as Chris Clark drove him with finishing the day 4-5 w/ 4 RBIs. The Scots were trying to put Chris Clark in the field and Paas behind the dish but Paas jersey was being used by Clark and the only jersey left was bat boy Bryce Mercer's. While interim skipper Josh Lind was trying to figure out how to give Paas Bryce's jersey and all that, I got to partially live out my dream warming up Nick Adams behind the dish. Then they got down to business after the umps declared Paas ineligible for his number wasn't on the lineup card. Up 8-5, Lind was confident Adams had enough in the tank to finish the deal. He did that yielding only one run and the Scots took home third place with an 8-6 win. The Scots will play again tuesday at Jenison for another conference doubleheader.

Caledonia/GRC Rainout Quotes/Opinions

RECAP- Well the ball game was rained out which was even worse due to the fact that I was due to start on the hill with Keegs behind the dish. We boarded the bus with the varsity girls tennis squad and headed to Gainey Complex for the game. I got there and was warming up when all the sudden bolts after bolts kept appearing and rumbles of thunder louder than Trent's pile of a truck. So then my amazing second mother Momma Mulvey gave me a ride home and here I am. Next game is Saturday in the Hudsonville Invitational by the way.

THOUGHTS-So thoughts...I hate the rain and most of the time I hate the weather in Michigan. I mean it's gorgeous all the way until 5th macro then boom rain? Ridiculous. So for a rainout I learned quite a lot actually, I learned that its duck mating season as a mallard and a lady duck were going into the woods one following another. I learned that Adams really sucks at fungo golfing in the dugout. Most importantly I learned that in Michigan no matter what you expect to happen, the opposite is probably most likely. I most likely wont get a start this weekend so I'll be back to where I belong living life in the pen waiting for coach to signal in the lefty. May the rain not drown your flood your house! THOUGHTS- coming into today's game I was expecting us to pull out one if not two Ws and coast into our season like last year. However I learned that there are definately holes that need to be filled and improvements made in various aspects. Straight chilling for two games today I observed flaws by certain pitchers (not everyday readers still gotta be careful though) and I love the presence of Coach Lind. He lightens up the environment and is basically one of us. Being strictly a bullpen pitcher, you engage in a lot of chatter with benchwarmers and coaches and you learn a lot. Today was a chill day in the pen because I knew I wasn't gonna throw. Sadly, I won't be coming out of the pen tomorrow I will be starting on the bump and hopefully I get Mulvey behind the dish because he knows how to catch me well. Caledonia/GRC (DH) Recap

Before I begin I want to say that the account of the second game in this doubleheader will be a bit lacking due to the fact that I was being inducted into NHS. Shout out to fellow teammate Nate Pinder who also achieved this prestigious honor. So anyway back to why you all tune in (special S/O to my readers in Germany that's awesome I appreciate it). The Scots today started conference play with the Grand Rapids Christian Eagles. In game 1, errors and wild pitches would be the decisive factors. The Scots sent righty Nick Adams to the hill for the first time since giving up a home run to AJ Nye in the conference title match last year. In previous outings against the Eagles Adams struggled with control at times hitting six batters. Today was a bit improved but not much different. Adams only hit three and in the 4 innings he tossed allowed no hits but did allow 3 runs all earned and obtained the loss (0-1,7.00). The first and third runs respectively were courtesy of two wild pitches allowing runners to cross the plate. Sam Vanderwal came in to relieve Adams and did a servicable job in three innings allowing 3 runs but only 1 was earned. Down 6-0 the Scots began to rally much to the enjoyment of bat boy Bryce Mercer. The Scots clawed all the way back off hits, walks and passed balls to 6-4 with Danny Paas on 3rd and two outs. Dan Zeman was at the dish and the ball skipped away from the catcher. Paas with his 9.8-40 speed took off humming and scored without a throw to bring it within one. Zeman proceeded to draw a walk that brought Mitch Kious up to the dish with two outs and the tying runner on first. Coach Josh Lind was repeatedly trying to get Zeman to delayed steal but he wouldn't pick up the sign! Kious worked it all the way to a full count and still Zeman had yet to move more than 5 feet off the bag. The ensuing pitch when he finally decided to run, Kious struck out and the valiant rally had been silenced and the Scots fell 6-5.
             In game number 2, the Scots sent Keegan Mulvey to the bump for his debut. From accounts of coach Carl Giles, coach Josh Lind, pitcher Keegan Mulvey, and catcher Danny Paas (who got the game off) all told me basically this. I have no idea how but we put up 7 and only relinquished 1 and took that lead into the 3rd. Then as Coach Giles put it best, "the circus came to town". On 6 errors, 3 by Foreman, 1 by Kious, Andrusiak and Hamp the Eagles easily put 6 runs on the board to tie it. After trading zeros in the fourth, coach Carl Giles pulled the starter Mulvey (0-0,1.75) and went to Foreman to get it done in what was to be the last inning due to darkness. Foreman had worked his way to first and third two outs with the nine hitter up. He had the batter 1-2 when the first base runner bolted towards second. Foreman threw the ball to Hamp at second who committed his second error of the day dropping the ball and allowing the eventual winning run to score. The Scots attempt at a rally was merely a double by Foreman and three easy outs. Foreman (0-2, 21.00) got the loss yet again on account of bad circumstances. These squads play tommorow with the Scots sending lefty Nick Tuori to the hill for his first start since the disaster of last year versus the Eagles. So with that and the poor outing at West Ottawa expect not just Tuori but the entire squad to be looking for revenge and W number 1 tommorow afternoon.

THOUGHTS-So Holland West Ottawa for a high school had a very nice baseball field except the giant centerfield puddle we ran through during warm ups *cough cough Sleeman cough cough*. There bench was actually really comfy and about the third inning living live as a bullpen pitcher I had my sweatshirt on and was protected from the rain. I hadn't left my seat except to go ask for lineup changes. Then top of the 4th coach wants me to go warm up. The anxiety yet nervousness of the first outing of the season combined with the rain just wasn't my mantra today as y'all all saw on the hill. So I pick up Blown Save número uno on the year but life rolls on and with plenty of games left ill get some more relief innings, but until then I'll be straight chillin and living the bullpen life. #BULLPEN

     The Caledonia JV team off a 21-11-1 freshman year and adding a quality defensive infielder in Caleb Sleeman expected this year to produce great things. If game one is an indicator, the Scots will struggle to get there. The Scots fell tonight to the West Ottawa Panthers in a very interesting game to say the least. Austin Coon started the Scots off with a hit by pitch on the very first toss of the year. After stealing second without receiving the sign from skipper Carl Giles and a groundout from Sleeman, Coon was 90 feet away from giving the Scots their first lead in 2013. But in what would be a recurring pattern for quite a while on both sides, he was stranded with back to back Ks of SS Trent Foreman and backstopper Danny Paas. No action occurred until the second inning with one out when fresh off his single to third Keegan Mulvey was leading off the bag at first. An errant pickoff attempt by the righty Pale and Mulvey was off and much to his mothers discretion slid into third base with just one out in the inning. An RBI double to the right centerfield gap by 2B Ben Hamp gave the Scots the 1-0 lead. The Scots would lead 3-0 into the 3rd when with two outs in the bottom half reliever at Trent Foreman was called in to relieve the Scots opening day starter Sleeman. It was a quality outing favor Sleeman who in 2.2 innings and 71 pitches allowed 0 runs on 0 hits 7 walks and 3 strikeouts. With a 3.31 ERA his freshman year, Trent Foreman repeatedly worked the Scots out of tough situations in 2012. Foreman quickly retired the first batter he faced in the 3rd, however that would be his only out of the day. Up 5-0 and going into the 4th the Scots felt they were on the path to victory despite the newly occurring heavy downpour. Tuori threw a pitch that went off the catcher Paas' glove and skipped about three feet to the right of him and the runner was taking off for home. He appeared surely out as all Paas had to do was tag him. Well that didnt quite happen and so the Scots trailed 7-5. This would be the final as immediately following the next pitch which evened the count at 2-2 the first base umpire ruled the game to be over on the account of the ginormous puddle forming around first base.
